Robert Neave 1842 to 1881

Robert Neave was one of my eight great great grandfathers. He was the son of James Neave and lived in Honing, Norfolk for most of his relatively short life. Born on 10th July 1842 he was not christened until he had a number of siblings and they were christened together on 3rd June 1855 when he was almost 13.

By 1861, at the age of 19, he was a fully qualified Bricklayer living at home with his parents in Honing.

He married Jane Ann Slaughter in 1864 and they had at least 9 children together.

Robert like his father had become a bricklayer and by 1871 was employing one other bricklayer and two labourers (according to 1871 Census)

On the 1881 Census he had become a farmer, farming 20 acres and employing one man and one boy.

Robert died on 27th December 1881, aged just 39, and was buried on 31st Dec 1881 in Honing Churchyard, leaving a wife and 9 children to support themselves.

Jane and most of her family left Honing shortly after Robert's death and moved to Bedlington in Northumberland where they were living close to Jane's parents who had moved there a few years earlier. Her sons James and William became coal miners, Arthur moved out of the household and got married in Bedlington in 1891
